A Whole New Look for Darkroom: Light Mode, Multiple Spaces, Shortcut Action, and Sound Effects. We’re thrilled to finally share with you our iOS 13 & iPadOS update. iOS 13 and iPadOS are a huge upgrade for Darkroom and showcase again our continuously deepening integrating with the iPhone & iPad ecosystems.

  • Light Mode A new look for Darkroom! Dark Mode support on iOS 13 had the nice consequence of making it possible for us to add theming to Darkroom. It’s easy to switch right from Settings in the app, and our new appearance modes are offered in three options: Always Dark, Always Light, and Follow iOS. To match the new light mode, we also added a lighter option to change the app icon!
  • Multiple Spaces for iPad On iPadOS you can now drag and drop a photo to create a Split View* *enabling new and creative workflows. Simply tap and hold to pick up a photo in the Library and drag it to the left or right edge of the screen to open an editing space.
  • Shortcut ActionCreate a Shortcut with our Action to import, filter, frame and prepare your photo(s) for export! Unlocking an unprecedented new level of automation with Darkroom thanks to the expanded capabilities of Siri on iOS 13.
  • Sound EffectsWe worked with the amazing Josh Mobley to create a gorgeous collection of sounds that extend the inherently emotional photography experience to your tools. This is just the first step and we can't wait to hear what you think as we make Darkroom an even richer experience.

Darkroom Histogram 4.2

August 6, 2019 – Build 4204

The Darkroom Histogram is finally here in all its colorful, curvy glory! We obsessed over these curves to create a histogram that was easy to use that goes beyond just a graph of numbers. Our primary innovation here are the rich, verbose clipping indicators. Instead of abstract shapes that have no meaning, we show you contextual words that guide you through the histogram-driven editing process. We spent a lot of time making sure you see the right thing, at the right time, and in the right context.

  • Histogram Easily spot and fix exposure and color problems with your photos objectively, in a way that eye-sight alone isn't suited for.
    • Accessible either from the (…) action menu by selecting Show Histogram, or in Settings.
    • To hide, simply swipe it off-screen to the right.
    • On iPad, the Histogram is on by default on top of the tools.
  • Clipping Warnings Objectively see pure black and pure white and know with certainty that you have fully utilized your tonal range.
  • Clipping Overlay We also indicate where those clipped pixels are by highlighting the purple white ones in red, and the pure black pixels in blue.
  • Blacks & Whites Tools Easily stretch your darks towards true black, and your lights towards true white. To help fix those shots that looked a tad flat and washed out, with a lack of true white or black.
  • Curves We now show you the curves of all edited channels in each channel. This means less switching to see or match what edits you had made in any of your other channels.

Darkroom 3.8 Grain & RAW + JPG

November 9, 2018 – Build 38005

Hot on the heels of our iOS 12 & Hashtags release last month we are thrilled to bring you one of our most requested features: Film Grain. Combined with a wide set of RAW and Portrait workflow improvements.

  • Grain An intelligent and advanced film-simulation grain that adapts to your photo and creates a much richer and nostalgic look. It introduces an emotionality and a mood to your photo that the crisp, clean, de-noised digital images of today cannot capture. Grain adds texture into otherwise flat regions of your image, giving your eye something to look at, something to notice.
  • RAW + JPG For the first time on iOS, seamlessly switch between RAW and JPG when available. Our good friends at Halide are the first and only app to support capturing RAW+JPG in a combined single asset that does just that. So now in our library there is one asset with a new icon, indicating RAW+JPG contains two files to switch between. And when viewing/editing the photo there is a type switch button in the top left.

Darkroom 3.7 iOS 12 & Hashtag Sets

October 4, 2018 – Build 37012

Following a long summer break in which our founder Majd Taby got married in the beautiful (and hot) fields of southern France, we are back with a feature-packed release.

    • Siri Shortcuts — Define a custom shortcut for several hashtag sets, and access it from anywhere in the system using your own custom phrase.

  • Portrait HD Added support for the new High-Definition depth-map that iOS 12 generates when it detects a face in a Portrait-mode photo, that provides much sharper hair-and body contours. By default we use the Portrait HD depth-map when it's available. We made it possible to easily switch between Standard and HD right when editing a photo.
  • Progress & Status Now when (batch) exporting photos we will show progress as a percentage, and even say what we are doing (downloading, saving) to make waiting a more transparent experience. And upgraded our status messages to clearly indicate when things are done, or acknowledge a successful action; copied hashtag sets etc.

  • Duotone Filters - Premium The brand new Duotone filters are a bold, colorful, and playful alternative to black and white photos. And are a wonderfully graphic pairing to our new Frame Tool. The frames will perfectly match your photo's mood and truly enhance and extend them.

With an eye on privacy, Darkroom 3.6 adds a location toggle to enable and disable embedding location information in photos when exporting. Depth Editing

Darkroom 3.5 Depth Editing & Extended-Range RAW

March 29, 2018 – Build 1517

We're extremely excited to get this massive update out to door to you and your friends. We jam packed it with amazing new features, improvements, and fixes. A huge thanks to all of you that helped test and provided feedback! Interested in helping test future versions, head to darkroom.co/beta and request access.

  • Depth Editing Tools Now, when Darkroom detects a photo captured using the Portrait Mode effect, it will allow you to separately edit the foreground and the background and it's blur, even allowing you to manipulate the depth map range itself. We're very excited about this as Depth Editing is unlike any other editing experience you've seen on iOS. For free.
  • Depth Aware Filters We have updated our existing popular Portrait filters, and our newly introduced Instant filters to be depth aware, enabling them to have depth adjustments built right in! Combining the convenience of filters, with the power of depth. Ensuring you can make your portraits truly pop, with a single tap.
  • Extended-Range RAW We completely revamped and supercharged our RAW engine. Besides significantly improved loading and processing performance, and the ability to now fully zoom in on RAW images. We also completely rebuilt our Highlight & Shadow sliders to pull way more from the shadows and recover more from highlights, and now also push them in the opposite.

In celebration of the release of the iPhone X into the wild, this release uses a mountain of new technologies to make the experience truly shine. This release further solidifies the foundation we built for the 3.0 release only a month and a half ago. Building on the momentum of the steady stream of previous releases, this release focuses on making the Premium Filters, Pro Color and Curves tools substantially easier to discover and try.

  • Discover & Try completely rethought the way to discover and try our Premium Filters and the Pro Color and Curves tools.

Read the v2.9 release post

Key Changes

  • The Curves tool now has handles on the curve line to make initial usage more intuitive, and color gradient vertical tracks to help explain the curves handles effect. (partly inspired by Denny Tang’s Tips video suggesting improvements for Tone Curves Tools).
  • The Color tool now has color gradients on the slider tracks to help explain the sliders effects. This is particularly powerful with the Split Tone tool, Color tool (premium), and Temperature sliders. As well as all other sliders in the Adjustment tool. In the Color tool it’s now also easier to understand what color has been changed, and how it has been changed.
  • The Filters tool now accommodates the presence of the all available premium filter even without purchasing them so they are easier to discover and try.

Darkroom 2.8

April 3, 2017 – Build 1002

This month’s update is a little early. Sometimes, things just work out that way! This one is a little smaller, but it builds on the work we did in 2.7.

  • Addressing one of the longest-running UX issues in the app, the navigation bar in Darkroom is finally persistent when in the editing view! You no longer have to swipe down to share, and you no longer have to swipe down twice to go back to the library. This change is enabled by the redesign of the Export flow in 2.7 which dropped the Save as Square photo.
  • The “Other Services” share dialog now integrates deeply with third party apps. Instead of the plain text Instagram share option, you get the “Copy to Instagram” share option which uses Instagram’s native share dialog. (Thanks @kevinshay for the tip)
  • Updated the app’s interstitials to disappear faster.

    • Swapped out the custom font we used for Apple's lovely system standard San Francisco font.
    • All our in app icons have been updated to be a touch friendlier (softer corners), to be simpler (fewer objects), and where tweaked where possible to better explain their function.

New in this version of Darkroom

  • Added ability to sort by Date Added as well as Date Created. You can change the sort in the Album Selector, and your choice is sticky, meaning you have to manually change it back if you want to. This is very helpful when you want to find a photo that is created a long time ago, but that you just added to your library recently. It's the equivalent of the "All Photos" album in the Photos app.
  • Added new "Conserve Battery" option to Settings, disabling live preview of sliders.
  • Fixed a bug that caused the app to crash repeatedly when starting up. The bug was caused by data corruption. If the files get corrupted, the data is still lost, but at least now the app will open up and you can keep using it. Still investigating long-term fixes for the data corruption bug.
  • Fixed a bug that caused to break on previous generation devices (iPhone 4S and iPhone 5).

  • Fixed a crash when using iCloud Photo Sharing.
  • Dropped 1MB from the app bundles size!
  • Fixed a typo in the on boarding flow.

Known Issue

Darkroom 1.0

Why another photo editor? Frustrated by a lack of control over the editing process, and the amount of work involved. We knew we could do better. Our insight was that mobile filters were developed using desktop tools. What if the same tools existed on a mobile app?

Darkroom is our answer. By putting the tools used to make filters in an app, we’ve turned static filters to jumping off points for editing. For the first time, you can capture the perfect tone, and you can create your own filters. The editing tools we offer are carefully chosen and powerful. Everything about Darkroom is designed to be fast and get out of your way.

In distilling photo editing to its essentials, we’ve built the fastest, most powerful photo editing app on iOS. Along the way, we’ve eliminated the import flow, added infinite history, and built a foundation for the future.
